San Francisco, California
San Francisco is an unique place which offers unforgettable urban vacations. The financial and cultural center of the San Francisco Bay Area is renowned for numerous world-class attractions which are visited by millions of domestic and foreign tourists each year. Scenic beauty, chilly summer fog, rich cultural and ethnic heritage, impressive architecture, numerous exciting landmarks and plenty to see and do make San Francisco one of the most recognizable cities in the United States which is definitely worth visiting.
The Golden Gate Bridge also considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World is undoubtedly the most famous and recognizable landmark in San Francisco. The second longest suspension bridge in the United States after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York is viewed as one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. It is best seen from the Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco across the bridge. On the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge is the Presidio of San Francisco, a National Historic Landmark which is also home to Fort Point, a National Historic Site build just before the Civil War and Battery Chamberlin, a defense museum and artillery display. Nearby is the Marina District that was the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition but all buildings were demolished except for the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts which is also a popular weeding site for couples from the San Francisco Bay Area.
San Francisco is also famous for numerous unique districts each of which has its own character. The Chinatown is by far the most visited neighborhood in San Francisco and attracts more visitors than the famous Golden Gate Bridge. There you can find many good restaurants and exciting shops but many locals consider it a tourist trap just like the Fisherman's Wharf. However, the Fisherman's Wharf is also home to the Pier 39 where you can see the California sea lions, visit the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park which includes a museum and historic vessel fleet, and some other interesting attractions. At the Fisherman's Wharf you can catch the world-famous cable car that will take you up the steep rolling hills. But keep in mind that San Francisco cable cars are a major tourist attractions. To avoid waiting in line to ride you are highly recommended to walk to the next stop because some space is always saved for people who board along the way.
A trip to San Francisco would be incomplete without visiting the notorious Alcatraz Island, also known as The Rock which is world-famous for the Federal Bureau Prison that operated until 1963. One year before it was closed, Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin succeeded to escape the prison which came to be known as one of the most famous escapes ever carried out. Neither of the three famous prisoners were ever seen again. The Alcatraz Island can be reached by a ferry from Pier 33 nearby the Fisherman's Wharf.
